Ensure Your Home Will Survive The Winter

    home at winter

If you are wondering how your home will get through winter, it is essential you prepare it the right way. Whether this is sealing up the windows and doors or getting your boiler serviced. As long as you look after your home then it will look after you.

    Roof

One thing that can really damage your home during winter is a damaged roof. The roof takes a lot of force from the elements so naturally over time it can get weaker. If you regularly inspect your roof then you can keep on top of any general wear and tear that happens. If you do begin to notice your roof feeling a bit sorry for itself then you can contact a reliable roofing company to come and carry out the work for you. If you don’t inspect your roof and it leads to rain water leaking in your home then you could be looking at a far more expensive repair.

    Chimney

Something else to think about, if it applies to you, is the last time you had your chimneys cleaned. Ideally this should be happening once a year, potentially more but this depends on how often you use your fireplace. If you haven’t done this then it is a good idea to get it booked in with the chimney sweep before winter fully hits. That way you can ensure it is in full working order before you light the fireplace.

    Garden

Once you have sorted your interior it is a good idea to head into the garden. You might not think about the garden with winter approaching but you need to make sure it is ready for any storms that might hit. This means putting away all furniture or trampolines, or at the very least tying them down so they don’t end up in your neighbors garden. You should also make sure that you trim the grass one last time before the weather turns cold.

    Insulation

How cold is your home in winter? If it is unbearably cold then you might want to check if you have insulation in the walls or loft. Many older homes didn’t come with insulation so you have to put this in yourself. Take a look at a heat source which will help you learn where your home is losing most of its heat. There is no point heating your home all the time and wasting energy if it doesn’t stay warm. Contact your local insulation company, they will come in and have a chat with you about how they can help both you and your home. Subsequently also helping your wallet as with the right insulation, your energy bills will reduce.

    Boiler

Finally, one thing that will commonly break down during the winter months is your boiler. This is due to it not working very hard over summer and then being needed a lot more, it causes a little meltdown! If you have your boiler serviced regularly then this can prevent any winter breakdowns from occurring. It is also helpful when you come to sell your home if you have all the gas safety reports to hand.

Hopefully you found this article helpful and that it gave you some ideas on how you can get your home through a harsh winter. Remember, as well as your home you need to keep yourself warm and well.
